WE DO work with businesses just like yours:

WE DO Health & Safety have assisted us in achieving the requirements of our franchise audits. More importantly following an incident, a health and safety officer responded immediately and helped our management team in bringing contingency plans into action and controlling a potentially hazardous situation. The service and support has been first class and I can’t thank them enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a Fire Risk Assessment?

Likely, the answer is yes, all commercial premises, including some common areas of residential premises, requires a fire risk assessment.

How often is a review required for a fire risk assessment?

As and when any changes are made in terms of occupancy, layout, or premises use.

Who is responsible and how much is a fire risk assessment?

The cost is dependant on the size of the building, i.e. how many floors, its use and occupancy numbers, this can be discussed in advance. The owner, employer or occupier of the building is responsible for all fire safety.

Can you assist with SSIP schemes?

Yes, we support a number of clients with our retained services and help clients gain and maintain SSIP accreditation. We have extensive expertise in this area, can create all required documentation and most importantly, fulfil the role of ‘competent safety advisors’.

How often should my company’s risk assessment be revised?

They should be looked at regularly and altered in line with any company changes, incidents, or accidents. We liaise with our clients to review their risk assessments and ensure they are up to date.

Do I need a written health and safety policy?

Yes, if you have over 5 employees, your policy should be in writing and you should also have access to a competent person. This is a base level service which we provide to clients who do not wish to utilise our further advice services.

Can you help with accident investigations?

Of course, we would urge anyone to contact us immediately following an accident or incident so that we can begin the process. We will audit all existing documentation and procedures and put in place actions to prevent a reoccurrence and minimise repercussions following compensation claims.

What are the penalties if I break health and safety law?

Simply put, the maximum fine is an unlimited fine and or imprisonment. It’s not worth considering breaking the law, please get in touch with us if you have an issue and we will support you to resolve it.

What accidents should I report? And where do I report them?

You should report any accident resulting in more than three days off work. You should also report any dangerous incidents whether any injuries occurred. Any accidents should be reported to the HSE.

The below should be reported within 15 days of the incident.

  • Accidents resulting in over-seven-day incapacitation of a worker.
  • Accidents resulting in the death of any person.
  • Accidents resulting in specified injuries to workers.
  • Non-fatal accidents requiring hospital treatment to non-workers.
  • Dangerous occurrences
What is meant by ‘manual handling’?

Manual handling is anything that includes lifting, carrying, and moving something. Generally speaking, manual handling should be avoided and where possible equipment should be used to lift loads.

Why is health and safety important?

H&S is important as it protects employees, employers, and any members of the public from instances of harm surrounding the business activities. Poor H&S can cause accidents and injuries and can result in prosecution for employers, increased costs, and poor staff morale.

Do I need to display a H&S poster?

Yes, you legally need to display the approved HSE poster. It’s a requirement that all businesses who employ anyone must comply with. You must display the health and safety law poster or provide each worker with a copy of the approved leaflet or equivalent pocket card. You must display the poster where your workers can easily read it.

Can you help us with HSE visits?

Yes, we can carry out an audit of your premises and immediately advise you of what is required to meet regulations. We can also put a plan in place to work with you over a longer term to change your health and safety culture.

We work with clients both prior to and following HSE visits.

What are hazardous substances?

Anything that can result in ill health or causes harm can be classed as a hazardous substance. COSHH is the law that requires employers to control substances that are hazardous to health. You can prevent or reduce workers exposure to hazardous substances by finding out what the health hazards are; deciding how to prevent harm to health (COSHH assessment)

Is there a minimum and maximum temperature in the workplace?

When working indoors, the law dictates that the temperature within a building should be ‘reasonable’. There is no minimum or maximum temperature stated however, as a guide, in an office, the minimum temperature should normally be at least 16 degrees.

A maximum temperature cannot be given as high temperatures are unavoidable in some workplaces, however, employers must seek to ensure that safe working conditions are provided and where necessary, additional measures are put in place to allow employees to work safely.

What do Health and Safety consultants do?

H&S requirements are a lot of responsibility, however, it’s a responsibility that you are legally required to meet. Failing to do so can incur fines, penalties, and prison sentences. Whilst ultimately, the responsibility rests with the business owner, you can achieve compliance with the help of people outside of your business such as consultants. As a consultancy, we’re here to support you in your requirements allowing you to focus on growing your business.

What are the costs involved in using a consultant?

These are very specific to your business and your industry, give us a call and our trained H&S team can discuss this with you as there are a number of elements involved.  Its worth noting though that it may seem a daunting prospect using a consultant however, we’re here to help you avoid fines and minimise risk to yourself and your company and ultimately, you have to consider what that’s worth to you.

As consultants, we offer a bespoke service which means that we tailor everything to suit your company’s requirements. Our range of services varies from

  • Improving compliance paperwork
  • Providing up to date safety advice
  • Assisting with documentation to help achieve contractor approved status.
