Allergy Safety in The Workplace

Being aware of allergies at work is super important because it helps keep everyone safe and comfortable. Some allergies can cause really serious reactions, even from small exposures, so its important to be mindful whether its about what we bring for lunch, the cleaning products we use, or even wearing strong  perfumes. When we look out for each other this way, it creates a more supportive and welcoming workplace where everyone can focus on doing their best without worrying about their health. A little awareness goes a long way.

The Dangers of Allergies at Work

Allergies can pose serious risks in the workplace, and the UK legislation outlines clear responsibilities for employers to manage these risks effectively. Key points include:

  • Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974

Employers have a legal duty to ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, the health, safety, and welfare of all employees. This includes protecting staff from known allergy risks.

  • Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999

Employers must carry out risk assessments and implement control measures to prevent exposure to allergens. (e.g. certain foods, latex, cleaning products).

  • Equality Act 2010

Severe allergies may be considered a disability under this act. Employers are required to make reasonable adjustments to ensure employees are not disadvantaged at work.

  • Common workplace allergens
    • Nuts or other specific food items in shared kitchens
    • Latex gloves or balloons
    • Cleaning chemicals or strong fragrances
    • Dust or mould in poorly ventilated areas
  • Potential consequences of unmanaged allergies:
    • Mild to severe reactions, including anaphylaxis
    • Emergency medical situations at work
    • Legal and financial liability for the employer
    • A negative impact on employee well-being and morale

How Workplaces Can Support Employees with Allergies

Creating a safe and supportive environment for employees with allergies is essential for their health, well-being, and productivity. With proper awareness and adjustments, workplaces can significantly reduce the risk of allergic reactions and help everyone feel included and valued.

Good Practice for Supporting Employees with Allergies:

  • Encourage open communication- Create a culture where employees feel comfortable disclosing their allergies and any specific needs.
  • Carry out individual risk assessments- Identify specific allergens in the workplace and assess how they might impact employees with allergies.
  • Provide allergy-safe zones- Designate areas (e.g. nut-free kitchens or fragrance-free zone) to reduce exposure to common allergens.
  • Label all shared food clearly- Encourage clear labelling of food brought in for meetings, events, or shared kitchens to prevent accidental exposure.
  • Use hypoallergenic and fragrance-free products- Choose cleaning and personal care products that are less likely to trigger allergic reactions.
  • Educate and train staff- Provide training on allergy awareness, including how to recognise the signs of an allergic reaction and how to respond in an emergency.
  • Make reasonable adjustments- This might include flexible seating arrangements, access to personal air purifiers, or permission to work remotely if needed.
  • Ensure emergency procedures are in place- Keep first aid kits updated with allergy-specific treatments (e.g., antihistamines or epinephrine if needed) and ensure trained first-aiders are available.
  • Maintain good ventilation and cleanliness- Reducing dust, mould, and airborne allergens can improve conditions for those with respiratory allergies.

Being aware of allergies in the workplace helps keep everyone safe and comfortable. Even small exposures can cause big reactions, so a little care goes a long way. It also shows respect, helps meet legal responsibilities, and creates a more inclusive, supportive workplace for all.
